My, how terms change over time...note the book title. This is a knitting and crochet booklet. The price new was 10 cents. The copyright on the inside front cover says 1944 and was published by The Spool Cotton Company. I'm posting several pages from the booklet...I love the art work.
Check out this 70's dress from a 1972 crochet book....a recent yard sale find.
This book was published in 1953. As the title indicates, it is a "unique how to do helper" and shows how to "lighten and speed housework---Stretch household dollars to do more!"
The book is filled with illustrations similar to this one.

In the chapter about Laundry and Dry Cleaning I noticed a bleach product called Javelle water. The book states: "Javelle water is used on stains and uncolored linen, cotton, or rayon. Dip stain in Javelle water for 1 minute (no longer), remove the chlorine from the cloth with a sodium thiosulfate solution, rinse well in water."
